Support through loss—without timelines or expectations
Society is often taught that grief comes in stages. It is misrepresented as an organized linear journey with a beginning, middle, and end.
However for many, loss is not something one easily accepts and grief does not have a defined end. It’s something you move with, carry, and slowly learn to live alongside. Loss occurs from the severing of something which individuals hold great attachment such as the anticipated death or death of a loved one, pets, relationship ending, health changes, identity shifts, finances, homeland, freedom, and belonging in community. Grief tells the painful story of life that was, the life that is, and the life that could have been. It is heavy, involuntary, and painful often coming in waves, some of which knock you down and while other times may gently wade towards you.
At Akin, grief therapy offers a space to honour and witness your experience of loss while supporting you through the pain without the pressure to accept or “move on”.
“Grief is not a disorder, a disease, or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical, and spiritual necessity.”
-Earl Grollman
Grief therapy will help support through the waves you and meet you where you are, while grief unfolds at it’s own pace.
Therapy can help you:
Make space for the ebbs and flows of grief without judgment
Understand changing emotions and behaviours over time
Feel less alone in your individual experience and carry loss with more tenderness and compassion
Reconnect with meaning and continuity through reconciliation
Deconstruct the societal timeline of grief
Akin Approaches to Holding Space for Grief
Grief doesn’t need to be processed immediately, resolved, or made meaningful. It just needs somewhere safe to exist.

Grief is a universal human experience but how one grieves is individual. At Akin, grief can be experienced in a non-judgemental way without the pressure to make sense of the loss. We will witness and walk through it with you.
-
During times of grief and loss, the human mind seeks answers, rationale, justification, and meaning. Those answers sometimes become intertwined with regret, guilt, shame, and self-blame. At Akin, we allow kindness and self-compassion to exist with grief so you can create a gentler relationship with yourself while you carry it.
“Grief is not optional, it is the price of admission.”
-Rachelle Bensoussan
